ADC DAC 2 MSPS Implementation

Implemented ADC DAC 2 MSPS on Virtex II Pro FPGA. This is a 10 times higher in sampling rate compare to the previous post ADC DAC. The sampling rate is 2 MSPS and can go up to 4 MSPS.

So by using System Generator and a verilog blackbox I implemented an FIR high-pass filter and the result is very clean. high_pass_filter_scope_captures

ADC DAC Chipsets

I was testing on this ADC DAC chipsets at the Lab. Analog sent two each with next day delivery for free. Otherwise those can run to about 200 bucks. Kudos to Analog.

iPhone Case + Screen Film

If there is any iPhone owner out there who would like to protect their phone from any serious damage due to normal use or worse case an accident like a drop of it onto a hard surface, this is probably one of a good solution. I decided to get the Incase Protection Cover + Power Support Crystal Film Support from the Apple Store.

Since the phone will go into my pocket, I have chosen Incase Protection cover which is a silicon rubber skin for the iphone. It wraps around the phone pretty well. The rubber should protect the phone from any accidental knock on the table, or an accidental drop on a floor and the worse case a concrete floor. I have owned phones in the past, and it does happen, it will drop no matter how careful you are. You might got lucky and it never happen, so this is an insurance to the worst case scenario. Before you put on the incase protection cover, first let us work on the screen protection.

The screen protection that I have chosen here is the crystal film set from power support. After application of this film, you will hardly notice any different at all to the original screen. The film comes with the guide on how to perform the film installation. I have added several procedure to get the best result.

To perform the task, you might want to get a solution for cleaning, for my case, I have used a lens cleaner that I have for my glasses (it is biodegradable… oh great.. it is Earth friendly). A brand new lens towel. Start by cleaning the screen completely and then everywhere else of the phone. Once it is clean, just place it there on a clean table.

I make use of Dust Off Professional to blow all the dust on the phone as well as the ports. You will see after this procedure, the phone is really clean from dust, which is great. You might want to work in area free of dust, the best you could get probably in an air conditioned room with good air filters.

Once dust has been dusted off from the phone, start applying the film. You might want to align from bottom up. Try to align the round button hole to the film hole. Try to align the horizontal line between your phone and the film, then release it to the top so it will stick.

If you have done a great job this far, you should not see any dust trap in between your film and screen. If you do, don’t worry. There is a way to clean that off without leaving any fingerprints on the film. First, you should get a scotch tape and stick a little portion of the tape to the top of your iPhone, near the earphone. Lift it up and the film should follow. Lift until the area where you notice dusts are trapped.

Now, use the dust off to blow off the dust on the film, it should blow off almost any kind of dust or small particles off the film. Do not touch your film as you do not want to leave any finterprints at all. You might want to make sure that your screen is still clean, before reapplying the film.

Now you have a really clean film where you can hardly notice there is a film there. Lastly, place your iPhone into the incase protective cover, I chose the black color. It looks cool, and now I can place the phone in my pocket along with my keys with no worries :)

The result is pretty satisfactory. I could hardly see any air bubbles, in fact, there is none. I could hardly find any spec of dust in between the screen and the film.

The cost to purchase the case is roughly $30 range, and protection screen goes for $15 plus tax. That makes total protection for the iphone to be around $55. That wraps up this information session on how to protect your iPhone using case + film protections.

iPhone Pictures Unwrap

As promised, I am posting some pictures of my new iPhone. So far, I am enjoying the iPhone. It serves the purpose as an enjoyable piece of gadget. The email and safari are certaintly an upgrade for me since my previous phone I did not get a chance to use any of its internet capabilities. My previous phone was a Nokia 6680 which I use mainly to make calls, I did not sign up for a Media plan on that one so the internet capabilities was not used at all (what a waste) :).

Anyway, the iPhone email with IMAP idle support is an addon to me, it pushes the important e-mails that I needed. So far so good. I am using Courier-IMAP with IDLE capability on a linux system which works. Also the safari is good enough to be useful in a small device. Enough of the capabilities. In public places, iPhone also brings attentions. I was hanging out in starbucks the other day and people are actually trying to make conversation with me just to see the iPhone… oh my….. But there was this one girl who strikes a conversation by waving her hand infront of me, since I was enjoying listening to music on my iPhone and her intro line was… hey… is your internet working.. and I said oh yeaaa of course… I am using AT&T EDGE, what about you… she replaid she was using T-Mobile Hotspot and she was having problems going online..so anyway that is not the point… after all that, she actually asked… oh what is that … is that an iPod? … no this is an iPhone. She actually got a chance to play with my phone… I was thinking… what the hell with these people, it is just a phone, leave the phone alone… Anyway.. she is HOT! So are you getting an iPhone today too? :)

So here are the pictures I promised. A good user experience, this makes me consider to get a MacBook one of these days.

Presenter Mouse

Recently I bought a presenter mouse for my notebook. This mouse is from microsoft, product name is Microsoft Wireless Notebook Presenter Mouse 8000. This is great mouse with all of its functionalities. I have been using microsoft pointing devices and keyboard for the past years and I am pretty much happy with their products. Therefore, I am only looking for microsoft mouse when I went to the store. This time I need one for my notebook with presentation capabilities and a built in laser pointer which I think is cool…

Here are some pictures of it…

DSC02626
DSC02624

At first I thought I would have a flawless installation, but you will find out later. First, I tried to install using microsoft usb bluetooth transceiver that comes with the mouse. Everything works okay… no problem… mouse functionalities also works good….

But since I have a build in bluetooth transceiver that comes with my notebook, of course I want to use it instead of plugging in a usb doggle everytime I want to use this mouse. My notebook’s build in transceiver uses Toshiba Bluetooth Stack…. When I tried to pair the mouse with the build in transceiver, it detects it as a generic HID mouse. This means most of the other functionalities that comes with this mouse will not function. This is not good….

I tried to contact microsoft support, the rep. said there is nothing they could do on their side since Toshiba Bluetooth Stack is incompatible with this particular mouse. The microsoft rep said that there are some stacks that are not there so that is why it is not compatible. The microsoft rep suggested that I contact my notebook manufacturer and see if they are willing to provide an update to the toshiba bluetooth stack. Also, the mouse works okay with the usb bluetooth transceiver that comes with the mouse. So, next step, I tried to contact Sony Vaio support, and the rep. said …. this particular mouse is NOT compatible with their Toshiba’s Bluetooth Stack. The Sony rep said “toshiba and bluetooth stacks are two different things and they are not the same”…. And I thought ..oh really….isn’t there something called a universal standard? and he said there is nothing they could do on their side to resolve this and highly suggest me to get another mouse :D … oh maybe get a vaio mouse 8O Since when the rep. becomes a sales … Alright…. forget about the supports, they are not able to help me resolve this issue ….

So answer is No I will not ge another mouse. I still like this presenter mouse from microsoft…. I suspect problem is with the bluetooth stack… If i use microsoft bluetooth stack instead of the one that comes from my notebook’s manufacturer, everything should work fine! … So if you own a notebook that comes with Toshiba Bluetooth Stack and wants a quick fix to this issue, here is how I resolve it …

First, uninstall the toshiba bluetooth stack from add/remove program list… or from run type… appwiz.cpl and enter. Uninstall toshiba bluetooth stack. Then, reboot your notebook. When windows (windows xp with sp2 installed) load up, sony vaio notbook will prompt that there is ‘unknown’ UGX driver. When you try to find the driver, windows xp cannot recognize a correct driver for it …You will have to go to device manager or in run use devmgmt.msc, find ‘UGX’ and update device driver… it will not find a good match and gave up… You will have to show all hardware available and select bluetooth, then ‘Alps USB Bluetooth Adapter” (if there is one in the list) and install the drivers. After restarting windows, the bluetooth adapter will function as normal but with Windows Bluetooth Stack instead of the Toshiba Bluetooth Stack that comes from the manufacturer. All functionalities for this particular mouse will work great with the new Windows Bluetooth Stack…

If you are not able to find the driver hardware for ‘Alps USB Bluetooth Adapter”, then you might have to do this trick. Go to device manager, select ‘UGX’ and go to properties. Under the details tab, select ‘Hardware ID’. Write down the two PnP IDs which go like “Vid\Usb …”. Edit ‘bth.inf’. This file is in %windir%\inf dir. Add two new lines under Sony section. Choose your own name and use the PnP IDs from above. Follow the same format as the other lines and save it then try let windows find the driver again…. It should detect the driver and you will have Microsoft Bluetooth Stack instead of the Toshiba’s :)

The mouse works great for me now and I am happy with it….. I have other bluetooth devices that connects to the notebook, and pairing them with the new Microsft Bluetooth Stack, all is good….

Battery Issue with VAIO SZ

Recently, I have an issue with my sony vaio notebook battery. The battery is not performing as it used to. It charges really fast to 100% or I should say the charge suddenly jumps to a full charge. Then, without AC power, battery depletes in about 30 minutes or so…. The particular battery life is only 9 months…. It is not normal for it to discharge that fast… Therfore, I gave sony c.s. center a call. Since it is still in warranty, they agreed to replace my battery… so now with the new battery on, everything back to normal. Also, knowing that the largest LI-ION battery recall was from sony.. I will question more about the quality of sony battery … So far so good with the new battery… :)

Can’t Hibernate Computer with 2GB of RAM in XP

One of my computer occasionally does not hibernate. It bothers me a lot recently. When it is suppose to go for hibernation, an error occurs which says “Insufficient Systen Resources Exist to Complete this API”…. Oh my… plus I have recently fresh installed the windows xp in c drive. This occurs on my Vaio SZ370P. After searching for a solution, I came across KB909095 from Microsoft support site. The explained cause on the support site is “This problem occurs because the Windows kernel power manager cannot obtain the memory resources that are required to prepare the computer to hibernate.”…. Alright, so I installed the hotfix and whala! no more failed hibernation…everything is perfect…
