I Love My Sony Vaio

I am still in love with my sony vaio sz notebook. I think I made a good choice and no regrets for the high sticker price. I am still enjoying the great wireless wide area network technology for my internet solution. But I would still expect the WWAN speed to increase significantly. Four to five times the speed of old days dial up is just not gonna do it… !

My New Notebook

* WPG2 Plugin Not Validated *
So here is my new lightweight notebook still in the bag. So actually I opened the notebook in my friend’s house and what a notebook. I liked it and my friend like it as well. At first she was not really impressed by the sample model at the store. Not until we play with it and carry it around and it is just a great portable notebook to have. There is no regret and a great choice.. get a sony vaio for your next notebook :)

So lets get the box out of the bag and unleash the power of Sony Vaio SZ370 with Intel® Core 2 Duo Processor T7200 (2GHz, 4MB L2 cache), 2 GB of ram. A great thing about this is the integrated WWAN. I am not yet to sign up for the Cingular Wireless WAN. So that is the next thing I am looking into. I was told that the WWAN speed is about 3-4 times the speed of the old days dialup connection. It is not so bad isn’t it ? considering that you can have internet connections almost anywhere at anytime.

Carbon fiber casing makes this one lightweight. Good finish, but becareful with it because I realize that the carbon fiber casing scratches pretty easily. So it is not scracth prove guys…. correct me on this if i am wrong. So is this like a racing car now … heh… carbon fiber casing ;)

VGN-SZ370P and P is for premium. Well, the price is impressive too. I think this notebook is a little too high on the price in compare to the other notebooks with the same specs. But, what can I say. I just love this notebook. A great notebook, fast, and never disappoint me ‘yet’.

Sony Vaio SZ 370

So I have been using the Vaio notebook for about a week now. I started to love it because of it being light and it is very convenient for me to bring it anywhere. The display is so much brighter and the razor thin LCD makes this notebook a plus. The carbon fiber outer casing is indeed eye catching. I also love the 2GB memory and a powerful Intel core 2 duo that this notebook has. Overall I think it is worth the buy for about 2700 usd.

A New Notebook in Mind

I am planning to get a new notebook within this week. My current notebook is a Toshiba. When I bought the notebook, it was not the high-end. I have a couple of complains about it. The complains are that the notebook is too heavy for normal outdoor use, the computer got heated too fast and it has a noisy fan. Afterall, the price that I paid for the Toshiba makes me accept those disadvantages. I am always been a fan of sony products. So considering this is my third notebook upgrade, I am thinking of getting the Sony Vaio SZ series. I am looking for a notebook that is ultra-light and not noisy. The SZ series has all of those met. Therefore, the SZ 360 or 370 Premium Series is now at the top of my shopping list. I have done my research and I am now 80% sure that this is the notebook I am getting this week. Nevertheless I am always open for other brands and inputs from the readers.

Memory Stick Pro Duo

* WPG2 Plugin Not Validated *

I used to be using a 32MB memory stick pro for my Sony DigiCam. At 32MB, it is only capable to store 12 images with Fine mode at 5 Megapixel. That is not sufficient for every day usage. I usually have to step down in pixel size to get more pictures. Therefore, I have just bought a 1GB memory stick pro duo. This bumps up the camera capacity to 384 pictures with the same specifications. Plus I got it at a discount, good deal :)

Two Different Cameras

Two different cameras produce two different image results taken under the same conditions. One is taken using FujiFilm E550 and the other using Sony DSC-W1. Both images are good. Details of the Nokia keypad can be seen easily on both pictures. The first picture is taken using Sony digital camera and the last picture is taken using Fuji FinePix E550.

Computer Case Cleaning

So now i am back for another blog post! Summer was great except for the hot weather which I personally don’t like. Fall quarter is about to start in a week or so. Today is the day for my once in five months computer case cleaning. It helps to clean the computer case once in about 5 months or so to keep the components and peripherals in good working conditions and also it helps to keep the room free from germs. I will show you a picture of the dust that piles up at the bottom of my computer case. Then you will realize why there is a need for the clean up.

Where does all those dust come from… oh my… okay so after cleaning up using a piece of clean cloth, water and alcohol this is what happen, not really a perfect job but at least cleaner.

It looks like new after removing those dust and dirt. A better air circulation for the case as well. I have skipped to clean the electronic components that could be tedious and need a lot more attention.

Fried an Old HD

I searched through the storage today and took out an old machine. Attached an old 550 MHz Pentium III processor and an ancient 10 GB Hard Disk Drive. I have downloaded i386 iso images of Fedora Core 3. Spend some time burning them to CD. After an hour or so for download and burning time, I happily install Fedora Core 3 into the machine. Everything went smoothly that far. I am able to boot up, login and network is working great. Then, I rebooted the machine several times through ssh. On the third time, I heard a clicking sound and then pops, rushed to the machine, switch the power off, took out the cover and that familiar burning smell. Took out the HD and found the seagate chip fried… I do not know the cause of that. I guess it was due to a bad old HD. This is the first time that I have a fried HD. I hope it would not happen again. I am planning to reattach a new hard drive to that machine and see what happens next. :)

Xilinx Protoboard

* WPG2 Plugin Not Validated *

You will not believe this one.. This one is amazing! The spartan 3 FPGA board from Xilinx is for beginners in Field Programmable Gate Arrays. I have been sharing this board with a friend of mine last quarter as we were working together in the laboratory. I am absolutely amazed by what this little board can do! It has 200,000 gates (enough for beginners to mess with), 50 Mhz crystal oscillator clock, 2 blocks of 256K*16 SRAMs. Another thing that I like out of this board is that it has ports such as RS232 Serial, VGA, PS/2, Parallel Ports. This gives the flexibility to interface with other hardwares.. I have successfully design several modules such digital clock + alarm, keyboard interface, monitor interface, printer interface, FIFO, UART (Universal Asynchronous Receiver and Transmitter) using RS232, several casino game modules, wheel controllers, and others .. :) I could not help it and order one for myself..

Storage Space Issue

My data storage space is currently at about 80% of usage. Therefore, the need for an additional storage drive. I have just added an additional 250 GB. This addition gives me a TB of storage space. I could see that a TB would no longer be sufficient in time to come as files just got piled up really fast…
